I am very, very lucky to live near a nationally-renowned avian & exotic vet. (The patients before Sophia included a penguin (!!!!) and a lemur!) She is the consulting vet to a number of zoos as well as Zupreem Parrot Food. She used to be a staff veterinarian at the Miami Metro Zoo. So needless to say, I trust her. She conducts independent research and publishes scholarly

Today is Day 1 of new meds for Sophia. She's still picking at her feathers, and lately I noticed a few small blood spots. I took her in to the vet yesterday and they are doing a complete work up of her blood. (The preliminary results show she is very, very mildly anemic, but that is all--everything else looks good.)

The new meds are a combo anti-depressant / anti-allergy one. The old "parrot antidepressants" had very poor effects, often making the parrots too tired to pluck, and when they had more energy, they'd go back to it. This is a foot rub, supposedly so mild as to not have those side effects.

My observations so far are that she's unusually well behaved. LOL. It's supposed to be "calming." She's also not obsessively preening, which is a great improvement. On the other hand, I wonder to what extent her unusual sweetness is from being tired... She's very cuddly today. We shall see...
