Internet-generated music taste

I'm not sure that's the correct title for this post, but I'm too doped up on Tylenol III to think of a better one :-)
This morning on the radio I heard about William Hung's new album, "Inspiration". He's the guy, if you will recall, from American Idol, who sang really funny, was kicked off, and then everyone loved him because he reminded them of "Fanfare for the Common Man who Sings in the Shower". I have several thoughts on this, and if I type quickly I will remember them long enough to get them out.
1) The only reason he has a new record out is because people loved him and devoted websites to him. This may be the first time in history that the internet impacted so directly (yet so indirectly) the choosing of a star. On the one hand, yes, you can vote for your fav American Idol online, so that's a pretty direct impact of the internet, but on the other, the *people* chose this guy through their attention to him. Hollywood responded.
2) If he does become fairly popular, he could potentially change the nature of pop-music. Up to this point, singers are hot bimboes with (supposedly) good voices. This guy is loved for the fact that he's none of that! He just loves to sing and be himself ... just like the rest of us! This could start a new era in music - an era where the Normal Person is idolized.
