Haha. I love my husband. I stayed home from school today to study for my oral arguments that are coming up next week. At about 4:30 I decided I should probably clean something... it's starting to smell. So I cleaned the kitchen and part of the living room. I also cleaned the office and took the trash out.

He walked in the door from work. "Wow. You did some cleaning. Why? Is someone coming over?"

(Note: We both have been too busy to do anything but work/study for the past two weeks - he's had a trial almost every day, and I've had briefs, oral arguments, and other things due.)

I think next month we shall hire someone to come and clean...

i'm thisclose to hiring someone to come clean... our place is getting so bad. especially this past week, with him working so much and me writing ALL the time. and now we're going away, and I hate coming home to a messy house. maybe he'll surprise me and DO something when he gets home!

i also had a trash-outing yesterday... it made me feel a little better. :)

LOL. It's funny b/c the only way the kitchen is messy is all the microwave meals, paper plates, sytrofoam cups and paper towels all over the counter. (The trash was too full to put them in there.)

So it's not even like there are dishes to wash...

I was hoping we'd have a cleaning night, but J is so tired from three trials this week that he's going to go to bed now (6pm). Maybe he'll get around to the other stuff tomorrow.

Here's hoping yours will too!

By the way, would taking classes full time next fall, while being on law review, conducting research for an international human rights organization, and being vice president of Women's Law Group be a suicide mission (remember, driving still 3 hours/day)?

Oh, also I think I'll be doing an externship for the international human rights organization this summer so I may not have to take 15 hours of classes... Perhaps just 12... Would that make any difference? :-)

12 is a little better. do you get any credit for law review? we only get ONE unit!

From: [identity profile] niff.livejournal.com
Not sure. If you get credit we probably will too. Is "Journal" = law review?

Date: Mar. 11th, 2005 11:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] avivalasvegas.livejournal.com
we do, but I know it varies at other schools. You can get another unit if your note gets published. But a friend at another law school was able to get like 6 units for his note!

Dang! That's awesome... What was your Note about? What are your feelings of Law Review? Would you do it again?

my note was about the state of California's desire to regulate the adult film industry, and all the attendant problems and issues.

unfortunately, being on a journal was really a waste of time for me. I spent hours in the library pulling sources and cite-checking and bluebooking. It probably doesn't help that while it covers interesting topics (Communications & Entertainment Law), it doesn't have much to do with my desire to be in labor and employment. but like I said below, there is a prestige factor involved, and most employers like seeing your participation.

Definitely. In what way are they trying to regulate the adult industry? Is this a response to the ones who found out they contracted HIV? Or is this on account of porn being "wrong"?

Interesting subject, btw...

it's in response to the four actors who got HIV last year. a very small % of actors wear condoms and are tested for HIV and other STDs every 30 days. something like 40% of the industry has had at least one STD. so they kind of have some self-regulation going on, but the state wanted to impose mandatory testing, which raises a bunch of 4th Amendment issues (the special needs doctrine, if you've done that). there are 1st amendment issues also, but i didn't go into that.

but the real source of the problem is the lack of condoms, which the companies don't want b/c they claim that consumers want to live out the fantasy portrayed. almost all gay porn uses condoms, though, and Nevada regulates prostitution which mandates the use of condoms (and makes quite a bit of $ as a result), so their argument doesn't hold that much water.

i could go on and on, but that's the general idea. The CA law was tabled in December, and not much has happened since then.

Ah - very interesting. Based on the literature, what is your view? Do you think it is a valid argument the gov't makes?

Pretty much. It's perfectly legal to force HIV testing of those convicted of certain sex offenses b/c of their high risk group status, and HIV testing of firefighters and paramedics has been upheld b/c of the uncontrolled environment in which they work. the govt wouldn't be willing (or able, really) to control who porn stars have sex with off the job, of course, but the attendant risk to the other people they work with and to the general public is probably significant enough to justify it.

in short, yes!! you forgot job searching in there, too. LOL.
T
his year I've had a full load of bar classes, work 15 hours/week (with 1 hr commute each way, 3 days/week), journal (for which I just turned in my Note, a huge time suck), and I participated in fall OCI, which took a LOT of time (esp. considering that I didn't even get a job out of it!). Plus we moved at the beginning of fall semester and have had numerous problems with our new place, which take extra time and energy. And it all SUCKED. And it's not over for another, what, 2-plus months?

2L is supposed to suck, but I highly recommend doing what you can to keep it from sucking the maximum amount imaginable.

Oh dear, I thought 1L was what was supposed to suck? :-)

What is OCI? Journal?

Do you think I should drop Law Review and do the human rights research and women's law group (just finding a speaker 1x/mth)? I'll probably work for this international human rights organization over the following summer - it's the only one based in South Florida, but they do human rights work for the Americas - mostly South America, and said if I did a lot of research there, I'd have a job opening when I got out of law school...

OCI = On-Campus Interviewing. At my school, it's 3 weeks in the fall where lots and lots of firms come and interview students for the 2L summer. Though it sounds like that your career interests lie elsewhere, so that might not be a factor for you. Outside of probably the top 20 schools, only a 1/3 or fewer of a class will get their first permanent job that way.

Journal = law review. At my school, most ppl participate in one of the six journals, which includes the law review. Sadly, law is a prestige-based profession, even though it shouldn't be, and employers love seeing that participation on your resume, esp. if you make the main law review. So I probably would keep it.

Finding a speaker for once a month doesn't sound so bad. I did that for a group in college, but I organized prob. 15 or 20 different speakers through the year, and that was way too much time.

basically, you're in law school to get a job, so you ultimately do those activities that will help you achieve that goal. My current job is related to my ultimate goals and was a huge help in landing the position that I did get.

sorry, I'm not trying to scare you or anything... but 1L seems a lot better in some ways from my vantage point!

Hehe, I'm enjoying 1L quite a bit this semester. Having moved back in with James made such a huge difference... I'm really at the top of my class now, and enjoy studying and such so much :-)

I'm actually depressed that I only have 6 weeks left of classes! (I heart Wasserman and Mirow!!!)

I heard that 1L is hard b/c you're not familiar with school and such, and 2L is hard b/c you're doing so much stuff...

Based on what you said, I'll probably try to do Law Review then, as well as the research. I'll also see how much time the Women's Law Group will demand before I commit - and hopefully the credits this summer will allow me to take fewer courses in the fall so I can do all this stuff!
